Now that the 2012 Vans Warped Tour has come to a close, taking with it our exclusive in-field coverage, we’d like to punctuate the end of this epic summer adventure with a profile of the House of Marley stage featuring some of our favorite artists. Listen in as G-Eazy, T. Mills, The Constellations, The Green, and Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds recount their #LiveMarley summer on the House of Marley stage at the 2012 Vans Warped Tour.
Talk about a long and hot summer, but we did it! The first year for House of Marley sponsoring a stage at the Vans Warped Tour is now complete. I know I speak for everyone at HOM when I say we loved having our own stage to share the mission of Marley with each and every one of you!
Having said that, this will be my final blog from the road. Today I’m writing from the Portland airport before flying home to southern California. It feels so good to be back on the best coast – oops, I mean west coast.
Yesterday was actually my first full day off in two months. I slept in, and then went with a few friends to a beautiful “lazy” river in the Oregon mountains. I was told not to tell anyone where it is because it’s a “locals only” spot, but next time you’re in the Pacific Northwest, keep your eyes peeled for “Sandy Beach” off the Columbia River.
Anyway, back to the tour… If I had to pick the ten best shows we had this summer, it would have to be Denver, San Francisco, Ventura, Cuyahoga Falls, Tinley Park, Mansfield, St. Petersburg, and Milwaukee. I mean, all the shows were amazing in their own way, but these will be the shows that I will personally remember the most.
Before I sign off, I just want to give a huge shout-out to all the bands, crew, and fans that made the House of Marley stage a reality every day on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour.
As a proper farewell, I’ve put together a little parting gift for you all: a playlist of my favorite songs from the House of Marley stage at the 2012 Vans Warped Tour. Until next year, my friends….
With a 1955 VW Marley bus stocked with Marley headphones and a summer’s worth of sunscreen, the House of Marley’s Chris Hurley will be giving us a behind-the-scenes look at life On the Road with the 2012 Vans Warped Tour.
July 7 • Tinley Park, IL
Today we were just outside of Chicago in Tinley Park, Illinois. Chicago always has, and always will be a great American music city. We were so busy today that I am just now writing this from my bunk at 11:55 pm. In fact, we’re already driving to tomorrow’ show.
Today was a blur, but one band that stood out was The Green. They played an amazing set. Check them out. They’re from the 808 state of Hawaii and one of our favorites on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour House of Marley stage.
The Green, coming straight from the 808.
July 9 • Bonner Springs, KS
We’re in the heart of Midwest, USA today! Craig and I just got done throwing the football around with a few members of Ballyhoo!, Taylor just finished up her daily Yoga session, and now all of us are ready to begin spreading the good word about the House of Marley’s world class on-ear, in-ear and over-ear headphones. One thing I’ve noticed about the Midwest: people out here really do appreciate the eco-friendly side of our products. Pumped to keep making impressions everywhere we can!
Ballyhoo! amping up the Midwest.
July 11 • Cuyahoga Falls, OH
Today is another beautiful day for a rock show! All the trees and vegetation here in Ohio are so green and lush. Although it’s pretty hot and sweaty, I can’t complain because one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen is selling bottled water in front of our stage all day long… I think I’m going to go over there and tell her all about “one love,” if you know what I mean.
July 12 • Burgettstown, PA
Ran into a few of the guys from All Time Low yesterday at our nightly backstage barbecue. Really cool and friendly guys. I started to tell them to come check out the House of Marley VW bus sometime, but before I could even finish, they insisted that all the House of Marley people come down to their set today, so that’s what we’re on the way to do now!
In addition, we have a really cool band joining the House of Marley stage… Say hello to Lost Prophets! Today is their first day on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, and they deserve a warm welcome considering they came all the way from the UK!
July 13 • Holmdel, NJ
Today was a BIG day! So big, in fact, that its the largest single day in Warped Tour history! A total of 113 bands performed today, which is the most bands to have ever taken the stage in one day in the full 18 years of the Vans Warped Tour. In the midst of all the craziness, Justin from Anti-Flag ended up hanging with us on our bus after their set, pumped on his new pair of Zion Midnight in-ear headphones!
Justin from Anti-Flag is the latest to #LiveMarley.
When the House of Marley was invited to host a stage at the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, we were thrilled about the prospect of sharing our message, our products, and some of our favorite artists with audiences across North America. With a stocked 1955 Volkswagon Marley bus full of swag, Marley headphones, and a summer’s worth of sunscreen, the House of Marley team will be out in full-force at every date of the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, meeting fans, doing product demos and teaching kids everywhere what it means to live #LiveMarley.
Along the way, the House of Marley’s tour manager, Chris Hurley will be capturing the excitement in a series of backstage blogs, photos, and videos from the 2012 Vans Warped Tour. The first installment: coming to you right now.
June 15 • Huntington Beach, CA
My name is Chris Hurley. I am 25-years-old, from Huntington Beach, California, and I’m the House of Marley’s tour manager for the 2012 Vans Warped Tour! I just finished packing my bags for what promises to be a long and memorable road trip, kicking off tomorrow in Salt Lake City.
Joining me on the journey are Craig Jarvis and Taylor Miller. Collectively, we couldn’t be more excited about representing HOM on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, and I can’t wait to share our stories. Buckle up.
June 16 • Salt Lake City, UT
Today we are in Salt Lake City for day one, and WOW! Talk about a huge production. There are seven stages and almost one hundred bands on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour. So cool that the House of Marley is one of those seven stages.
In addition to having our own stage, we also brought along our 1955 Volkswagon Marley bus. From the bus, we get to sell Marley headphones and interact with 15,000 concert-goers on a daily basis. Believe me when I say our stage, our van, and our products turn heads immediately. We definitely have the coolest, most eye-catching setup if I do say so myself!
The ’55 VW Marley bus!
June 17 • Denver, CO
Glad to say we made it to day two. We almost didn’t. Whewwww…
Last night, we were getting ready to load the Marley bus onto the trailer for the overnight drive to Denver. You see, the Marley bus is 57-years-old and dropped so low, it passes for a low rider. The ramps on the trailer were less than four feet long, so trying to get our bus up and onto the trailer was almost impossible. It just kept bottoming out. We must have had 20 different people helping us push, pull and lift the Marley bus.
After about an hour of hard work and creative thinking, we finally got it onto the trailer and strapped down safely for the trek to Denver. It was really encouraging to see so many people help us out considering we are the tour rookies. But then again, who wouldn’t help out a ’55 VW bus in need?
June 20 • Las Vegas, NV
Not sure if this happens every year, but whoever organized the 2012 Vans Warped Tour made sure to schedule two days off in Vegas! Think its a good idea to have a hundred bands and sponsors spend two days in Sin City? We sure did!
We stayed at the Luxor, went out to dinner, played a little Blackjack, hit the gym and spa, then took in the sights and sounds of the strip, saving a little time to rest up for our big day today. Now it’s 100 degrees of pure desert heat. 12 hour days in conditions like these can sometimes be tough, but luckily for us we have plenty of water and amazing hip hop and reggae artists to get us through the day!
Back to work!
June 21 • Irvine, CA
We are back in Cali! Craig, Taylor and I all currently live in Southern California, so it’s nice that the 2012 Vans Warped Tour is already bringing us back home. We all have a lot of great friends coming to today’s show in Irvine, and we get to enjoy the cool Pacific Ocean breeze. A welcome substitute for yesterday’s desert heat.
Today on the House of Marley stage I’m most looking forward to Hawaiian reggae band, The Green and hip hop artist and Riverside, California’s own T. Mills. Both artists have strong followings here in SoCal. Gonna be dope!
T. Mills running the House of Marley stage.
June 22 • Pomona, CA
On our way to Pomona! Team Marley is definitely making our presence known here on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour. More and more bands are coming up to us asking about Marley headphones. What is House of Marley? How are Marley headphones Earth friendly? What is 1Love.org? These are all questions we receive every day from some of our favorite bands. In the first week alone I’ve been able to talk Marley headphones with Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, The Used, New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, Anti-Flag, G-Eazy and more. It’s amazing! I have yet to come across a single person who can’t appreciate something about Marley headphones. There is always something about House of Marley for people to relate to and appreciate, and I’m proud to be able to share this stuff with bands I admire and great people at every stop of the tour!
With the passing of the first day of summer, it seems about right that the Vans Warped Tour is up and rolling on its annual trek around North America. Combining the sun, sounds and fun time spirit of the season, the Warped Tour offers nearly 100 bands per stop, live action sports and tons of other diversions at every show along the way. This year the House of Marley is excited to get in on the action. We’re taking our Marley headphones on the road and sponsoring a stage for the entire summer featuring some of the hottest 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands.
MOD SUN • T. MILLS • G-EAZY
Offering up a Blink 182 spin on the rap of Lil Wayne, new stars Mod Sun, T. Mills and G-Eazy may not be the traditional Warped rappers you’re used too. Sure, these guys look more like the dudes who populate your favorite skate spot, but they’ve got more swag than a million Drakes combined. The truth is in the ridiculously catchy hip-hop that blurs the lines between pop-punk and pop-rap.
On the other side of the hip-hop spectrum, Seattle’s Champagne Champagne is one of the only 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands that make backpack rap that would have genre creators like A Tribe Called Quest head-bob with approval. The group features emcee Pearl Dragon and DJ Gajamagic, a former member of the punk band Blood Brothers, and are quick to sample or rap about anything in the pop culture world. No matter your preference, hip-hop is well represented on the House of Marley stage at the Vans Warped Tour.
STEPDAD • BALLYHOO!
There are several different ways a band can run with pop music. In the case of the Grand Rapids-bred Stepdad, the band combines pre-programmed music with live guitar and keyboards to create the catchiest dance pop you will hear this year. Coming off the release of their debut LP Wildlife Pop, Stepdad has surely made the soundtrack to the Warped Tour dance party for the rest of the tour. Of all the 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands, Ballyhoo! makes relentless pop music, but it falls more in line with tour veterans like Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. It’s simply great ska to skank by.
THE GREEN • TOMORROW’S BAD SEEDS • ECHO MOVEMENT • THE CONSTELLATIONS
Rounding out the list of 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands on the House of Marley stage are a number of artists whose list of influences surely include our Marley headphones namesake, Bob Marley. The Green, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, and Echo Movement evoke the images of Jamaican reggae musicians from Marley’s era and can back it up with their music. Also capturing the worldly view of Bob Marley, The Constellations from Atlanta are a group that encompass genres from country to R&B and don’t seem to care about classifications. They just care about having a good time.
Tomorrow's Bad Seeds
The House of Marley is excited to host this lineup of 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands on our stage everyday this summer. Be sure to come check out the Marley Headphones tent where we will be showcasing our on-ear headphones, in-ear headphones and over-ear headphones. Say hi to our man Chris Hurley who will also be on hand capturing photos and giving us a backstage pass along the way.
Stay tuned for more updates from the House of Marley and a fun summer of touring with all of the 2012 Vans Warped Tour bands.
