House of Marley x AfroPunk Fest Recap

AfroPunk Fest was fire! Commodore Barry Park was filled with positive vibes, great music — and STYLE. There are no words to express how beautiful this past weekend was. The people of New York City and beyond came together through art, music, and fashion and blessed Brooklyn with two wild festival days. And the House of Marley “Get Together” and Gold Stage area was the zone! The DJs filled the air with music the crowd could dance to all day long. Thank you Brooklyn!

SZA

Born Solana Rowe in 1990, this young lady has captivated hearts with her dreamy, haunting, electro-soul sound. SZA, is the first lady of TDE (Top Dawg Entertatinment) and began her music career in May 2012. Months later she put our her first EP See.SZA.Run and in 2013 she released her S EP, and Z EP in April 2014 two of three releases that will spell out SZA. With a talented group of individuals apart of her team, House of Marley is very excited to watch her take over the stage. SZA will be performing on the Red Stage at 5:15pm on Sunday, August 24th.

Sewer Rats BK

Sewer Rats BK, a collaboration between CXKiDTRoNiX, Jason Blackkat, Craig Flanagin, Dok Gregory, and Cinque Ubangi Kemp makes aggressive, challenging, lo-fi music with a mixture of punk and hardcore aesthetics. The wide array of instruments and effects creates a unique, abrasive mix that’s some of the most forward-thinking music coming out of the internet right now. Catch them on the Black Stage at 1:45 P.M on Sunday, August 24th.

Junior Astronomers

This group of dudes from North Carolina formed in 2007 and have toured and shared stages with Harvard, The Weeks, Dignan, Color Revolt, Des Ark, and Polvo. “Music needs to sound like human beings, like it’s alive. A lot of people want to make sad shit all the time, that’s one part of life but it’s not all life. There’s fun, there’s happiness, there’s sadness” – Terrace Richard (group member). The House of Marley is all for positive good vibes and we feel this crew will bringing those elements to AfroPunk Fest. Junior Astronomers will be performing at 2:45pm on Sunday, August 24th.

The Ooohh Baby Gimme Mores

This Toronto punk group will be giving us energy, crazy drums and catchy synth lines. The Ooohh Baby Gimmie Mores have shared the stage with Saul Williams, Janelle Monae and Kathryn Calder of The New Pornographers. So we know they will be bringing good vibes to stage. It is said that this group is guaranteed to have people  “booty shaking, and fist pumping”. Well, we can’t wait! The Ooohh Baby Gimmie Mores will be performing at 3:45pm on Sunday, August 24th.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings are a New York based funk/soul band known for their exquisite outfits and notable work with Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse.  With more than 10 years of recording, touring and shutting down all venues in sight, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings know the formula to be successful in the music industry. Knowing what their fans want from them and wanting the same thing. This group captured the hearts of their audience and big named acts such as Beck, John Legend and Michael Bublé. “Give the People What They Want” (2013) is their newest released and we can’t wait for what they have next. They will be performing on the Green stage at 8:30pm on Saturday, August 23rd.

Baby Baby

These Atlanta based energetic punk rockers are a group of dudes that you need to check out immediately. They will be rocking out on the Black Stage at 2:45 on Saturday the 23rd. There most recent release is their album “Big Baller Club” which can be purchased on babybabyband.bigcartel.com. Give these dudes a listen and prepare to vibe out.

HO99O9

Pronounced “Horror”, this crew has one of the coolest sounds out of anyone performing at AfroPunk Fest. Their music is an eclectic, aggressive mix of hip hop, thrash core and punk rock or noise as some people like to say.  Since forming in 2012, the group has been known for its provocative lyrical content. But who doesn’t love a little controversy once in a while? HO99O9 will be gracing the Black stage at 1:45pm on Saturday, August 23rd.

 Sunny Gang

A four-man punk rock group who loves everything we do: music, partying and having fun.  Their influences stem from hip hop, metal, soul, ska, and funk, and that list sounds great to us! Can’t wait to see these guys show out at AfroPunk Fest. They will be performing on the Black stage at 3:45pm on Saturday, August 23rd.
